Think about the last time you were properly sick. Not a sniffle, the kind where your whole body says lie down. A lot of people did not lie down. They took something to hide the fever, got on the bus, and sat at a desk or stood at a till feeling awful, because staying home meant a smaller pay cheque or an awkward talk with a manager. Some of them also had to go find a doctor, while sick, to get a piece of paper saying they were sick. I think that tells you a lot about how we see work, and how little we trust people.
A sick note is a weird thing when you slow down and look at it. You feel terrible, so you leave your bed, sit in a waiting room full of other sick people, and ask a doctor to confirm what you already told your boss.
The doctor usually cannot check much. They take your word for it, write it down, and send you home. Doctors' groups have complained for years that these notes waste appointments that could go to people who need care.
So the note does not really prove anything. What it does is make being sick a hassle, so that fewer people bother. That is the point of a lot of paperwork. It is a filter made of effort.
A sick day you cannot afford is not a sick day
Plenty of jobs give you a few sick days on paper. But if those days are unpaid, or you are on a gig app, or you are new and scared of looking unreliable, that day off is not really there.
So people work sick. There is even a word for it, presenteeism, where you show up but cannot really do much. You are there in body, mostly to prove you are not the kind of person who stays home.
The people who can least afford to stay home are often the ones handling food, caring for kids and old people, and working close to the public. The pressure to show up sick lands right where it spreads the most.
We all learned this during the pandemic
For a while, everybody was told to stay home if they felt even a little sick. It was good advice. It also showed very quickly who could follow it and who could not.
People with paid leave and jobs they could do from a laptop stayed home. People without that went in anyway, because rent does not pause for a cough. Governments ended up rushing out emergency sick pay because the gap was so obvious.
Then most of that went away again, as if the problem had been the virus and not the fact that so many people could not afford one day in bed.
Being sick is treated like a moral test
Underneath all of this is an old idea that people will fake being ill if you let them. So the system is built to catch fakers, and everyone else pays the cost of being treated like a suspect.
Most people do not want to be sick. They want to get better. The ones who stretch a day here and there are usually burned out, and that is a sign the job is asking for too much, not that the person is lazy.
When you build rules around the worst case, you end up with a world where honest people drag themselves in with a fever, and nobody is any better off for it.
What a floor would change
With a basic income, or neetbux, as a floor, a sick day stops being a money problem. You would still lose a day of wages, but you would not be choosing between your health and the rent.
That one change makes a lot of the paperwork pointless. You do not need a note to stay in bed if staying in bed does not wreck you. You rest, you get better, and you go back when you can actually do the work.
It is also better for everyone around you. Fewer people coughing in the break room, fewer kids catching it from a parent who could not stay home, fewer long illnesses that started as a short one somebody pushed through.
Rest is part of being a person
Bodies break down sometimes. That is not a failure of character, it is just what bodies do. A society that is this rich should be able to let people be sick without making them prove it or pay for it.
If you are a NEET who has been sick for a while, or worn down, or just not well enough for a job right now, you do not owe anyone a doctor's note to deserve a quiet day. Small help in the meantime still counts, and the AI you already pay for can claim paid micro-tasks for sats on neetbros.
Burnout is not a self care problem is about being worn down by work itself. Rest is not something you earn is about why rest should not be a reward. Help shouldn't feel like a trial is about the paperwork around support. We already trust kids and seniors with a floor is about where we already give people a floor without asking them to prove anything.
