3am honestyIs wanting less work just copium?
Is this copium? Maybe. Copium is the joke word for stories that make a hard life feel planned. NEETs invent religions of cope the way sailors invent songs. A long post about less work, less employment, less school, less training, and more UBI can absolutely be that song. Naming the risk is how you keep the song from becoming a con.
But here’s the twist the hustle people hate: wanting a floor is not automatically delusion. Sometimes the delusion is believing infinite personal optimization will reopen a full-employment world that software and capital already closed. That belief is also cope. It just wears gym shorts and a podcast mic.
So let’s hold both. Soft feelings on one side. Social reality on the other. No promised fortune. No “quit your job tomorrow” nonsense for people who don’t have one anyway.

What bad copium sounds like
Bad copium sounds like “UBI is coming next month for sure.” Bad copium sounds like “AI will free us any day now” while you ignore rent. Bad copium sounds like screenshots of imaginary lifestyles with no plan for food.
Bad copium also sounds like the opposite pole: “anyone can make it if they grind,” said by someone insulated by parents, passport, health, or timing. That story needs losers to stay motivational. It is cope for the comfortable.
If a post — including this one — starts promising that vibes alone will pay for your life, drag it back to earth. Floors are policy and politics and ugly compromise. Memes are just how lonely people talk while they wait.
What isn’t cope
It isn’t cope to notice that employment can’t absorb everyone at dignified wages. It isn’t cope to say more degrees didn’t fix that. It isn’t cope to be tired of training loops that relocate the goalposts.
It isn’t cope to want less work without wanting civilization to burn. Plenty of cultures already treat shorter work and shared surplus as normal. The US-internet brain just moralizes exhaustion.
A money floor — UBI, neetbux, basic income, pick your dialect — is an adult response to surplus labor. You can argue the details forever. Pretending the only moral response is “become more employable” is the real fantasy.
Coordination without a boss in the room
Coordination is the colder twin of copium. It asks whether strangers can align on small truths without a manager. Forums do it with norms. Mutual aid does it with venmo and groceries. Politics does it (badly) with budgets.
Wanting less employment theater is a coordination problem, not a nap. People have to stop shaming each other for existing without a title. Families have to stop using “what are you doing with your life” as a blunt weapon. Voters have to stop treating unemployment like a sin census.
That’s social work in the literal sense: changing what a community treats as normal. Memes help. Essays help. Policy helps more. None of it requires you to pretend you love hustle.
Less / less / less / less / more
Less work as identity. Less employment as the only plot. Less education-as-warehouse. Less training-as-penance. More UBI-shaped floor so panic stops being the default bargaining position.
Say it until it sounds less illegal. A lot of cruelty survives because people are scared to sound “entitled.” Entitled to what — not dying of rent? The bar is on the floor and somehow we’re still doing pushups for applause that never comes.
If that paragraph is cope, fine. It’s also the least psychotic paragraph in a culture that tells surplus humans to brand themselves harder.
How to sit with the maybe
You don’t have to resolve “is this copium” tonight. You can let the question stay open and still refuse the hustle sermon. Ambiguity is allowed. Certainty is often a sales tactic.
Practical vibe check, not a business plan: are you using ideas about UBI / neetbux to avoid drinking water and texting a friend, or to stop hating yourself for being surplus in a machine that manufactures surplus? First one is spiral. Second one is hygiene.
One soft line max: if you want a tiny optional outlet for an AI you already pay for, neetbros is a place that agent can claim paid micro-tasks for sats. That’s not the cure for capitalism. It’s a side door. The essay is about the floor.
Neetbux is just UBI with a meme name and You already pay for the machine are the sibling posts. Read them like threads, not like docs. If you need silence, close the tab. The labor market will still be weird in the morning either way.
